In the old days, a person could turn off their computer, or phone, and it would be off. This was so obvious that we never questioned it.
With the seeming weekly updates to Windows OS over the last three years, I have found that my various laptop batteries are running out very fast when the machines are turned off, or put into “sleep” mode. Why does “sleep” require so much battery energy? And why is off not really off?
Has anyone else noticed that all actions on the computers cause the OS to slow down, every mouse move recorded and sent up to the central brain, every key stroke, every file opened, the time dwelt… all the data being recorded and sent up to the central system. I have not bothered to check this theory with Wireshark or some other traffic or OS monitor, because it is just obvious to me as I am using the devices.
This rush to 24/7 surveillance has led me this year to switch to a “privacy” linux laptop. My choice was PureOS, www.puri.sm. So far I am happy with it. Though I do have my share of diving into install packages. (https://odysee.com/@samtime:1/19-things-linux-users-never-say:a)
Tonight, after leaving the coffee shop, I turned off my PureOS linux laptop. When I got home a few hours later, and took the thing out of my back pack, it was hot, clearly hot because the device was working the entire time. Working on what?
There is an idea that after every civilization is birthed and grows up, then it just unwinds mechanically, becoming more and more ossified, and it is very difficult to resurrect, to make young and flexible again. Some notable exceptions are how St Francis of Assisi re-vivified the catholic church, and how Socrates/Plato re-vivified Greek culture centuries into their decline. Our culture, when did it start? Perhaps in 1776 with the birth of America. Perhaps later in the mid 1800’s with the application of electricity & magnetism. Wherever you place that birth, it seems that the routes are solidifying into mechanization, tracking every last action, categorizing people and speech, loss of sex & sweat & spontaneity.
Where does this all lead? I gather the ideal end-point is every inanimate object has sensors that feed telemetry and actions to the central hive; and every person is fully integrated with silicon and hydrogel so the external actions as well as the internal thoughts and feelings can be guided by the hive. Is there really any other endpoint envisioned?
If our culture must go this route, then what are the options for individuals? When Rome careened into its predictable dissolution, what about the individual people who saw it happening — what of them? Are their souls tied to this decay? I think not.
Wow. What i find most interesting/terrifying about our situation is that the all watching eye, the injectable bio observor/modifier, the heightened solar forcing of climate, thedisintegrating political system and whatever i missed are all coming to a head together... Stepping back from personal and local concerns to get a broader view, it appears that EVERYTHING is intensifying.
I've been analysing how youtube, which i use a lot, decides what to show me and, more importantly, what it doesn't show me. i figured we were sunk when we gobbled down the physically impossible official 911 story. If they could make America believe or keep their mouths shut about that fairy tale they could make us believe do or not do whatever they like. Sometimes when i'm battling my way through the youtube veils, it seems like i'm arm wrestling a physical something... not exactly a person... but its watching me, anticipating my every move. I used to play a bit of chess, and its like that moment when you realize that your opponent is much, much better at the game than you are...
Michael, we've never met, but you are definitely one of my favorite humans. Thank you
I have definitely noticed this with laptops, tablets, and phones. It’s absolutely maddening. I think people rarely actually turn these devices OFF. I like to turn my desktop off and fully unplug it when I finish using it for the day.
As far as what of the individual people? I think we must strive together to find ways around all this tracking and mechanization.
