When someone speaks, it is sometimes the final utterance of many hours of thought. May I learn to better appreciate that, and take in what they say, and give something back.
My neighbor, who has a big beautiful house, is a single mother in her 50’s, is lovely and well educated, is frustrated with not finding a man to be with. After her hosting a large family party, she said to me, “what is the point of having a large house if you are not going to host large get-togethers?”
I nodded in agreement.
In that moment something in me knew that this utterance was the outcome of much thought and feeling on her part. What mixture of love and longing must have been been present for her in this party? How many hours had she rehearsed her choices in life, and defended herself in arguments against well-married brothers and sisters, while she served the main course. What arguments were in her while preparing the living room. And to me, a day later, she uttered the top froth of all that churning - “what is the point of having a large house if you are not going to host large get-togethers?”
And I just nodded in agreement.
Why would I not grab her hands and affirm her choices!
“...the top froth of all that churning”
What an utterly perfect sentence to describe human mind machinations, and so resonates with me as I too, have a large house with just me and ma dawg in it. Feng Shui clearly states that all space must be appropriately filled ie the home fits the number of people. So do I remarry or downsize for one?
Quite true. Are you married ?
