Experiment One
Put some de-ionized water in a beaker
put in some universal indicator solution
attach a copper electrode to either side of the beaker
put about 2 volts across the electrodes
wait an hour
Super cool, right?! Must be a couple of points difference between the two sides. At first glance, seems the beaker is divided into two cells, with maybe a couple of pH points difference.
There is no electrolysis, kept the voltage low on purpose.
Experiment Two, because magnets always do weird things, right?
Put some de-ionized water in a beaker
Put a small bar magnet on the bottom of the beaker
put in some universal indicator solution
attach a copper electrode to either side of the beaker
put about 2 volts across the electrodes
wait an hour
Looks like four sections to me
upper left: green
upper right: blue
lower right: purple
lower left: clear? yellow?
fascinating…
